Methodology
For over 30 years, GRASP Systems has been accurately capturing work requirements
and helping health care organizations worldwide make strategic business decisions
that preserve quality patient care. Valued by its clients for product excellence,
cost-savings, and superb client service, GRASP Systems has become the industry leader
in workload management systems.
The GRASP Methodology began as the outgrowth of a three-year field study to validate
the PETO concept developed at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. GRASP is
a well documented, research-based, workload measurement methodology. Since the completion
of its successful field test in 1976, GRASP use has steadily increased - now it
is the system of choice in over 800 hundred facilities worldwide and is the most
frequently recommended workload management system in North America.
Comprehensive Solutions, One Piece at a Time
The GRASP Methodology was originally embraced by nursing departments. Today our
methodology has grown into being used for resource management system-wide. By basing
the unit of measure on hours, the system is adaptable to multiple units within a
facility. It provides comparable data for executive decision making not only in
nursing, but also in ancillary/allied health and support departments. The application
is also suitable in affiliated healthcare organizations such as nursing homes, and
home healthcare organizations.
Getting the Big Picture
GRASP captures the professional components of work as well as daily interventions.
Traditional GRASP instruments divide work into four key components:
- Process - a comprehensive professional approach that includes, planning,
assessing, coordinating, consulting, and evaluating care.
- Teaching & Emotional Support for Patients and Family - an important element
often overlooked in non-clinical settings.
- Direct Care - includes interventions associated with each individual's work.
GRASP research has found that a limited subset of all potential interventions which
could be performed on any given unit or any given work area will account for the
majority of the work. The specific interventions selected will vary in each area
and for each facility. Each intervention includes a normal time, frequency, fatigue
and delay, and a factor for the unlisted/unpredictable.
- Indirect Care - includes the portions of the job which support the main work,
e.g., phone calls, ordering supplies, transcription/note orders, etc.
